| EMCL-Study programme |

The course consists of three teaching terms and an additional term to
write the masters thesis. The total number ECTS is 90 (i.e. a 15 months
programme). The modules that are offered to the students in each term are
similar at each of the participating institutions. During the first term,
core courses are taught, during the second and third term, specialized courses
(research classes) are offered. A more detailed description of the courses
follows below.
The first term starts in September and runs till December.
This is a more general part and contains core courses in theoretical linguistics
(morphosyntax, phonetics/phonology, semantics; total 5 ECTS), statistics
and methodology (5 ECTS) and clinical linguistics (developmental speech
and language disorders and aphasiology: 5 ECTS): total first term 15 ECTS.
The core courses will be highly similar at the different institutions (same
literature, same evaluation criteria). The courses are examined through
either a written exam or an essay.
The second and third term (January-mid April and mid April-July)
offer specialized courses in psycholinguistics, clinical linguistics, neurolinguistics
and speech technology. The programmes contain research classes in aphasiology,
developmental speech and language disorders, language and Neuro Imaging,
speech and speech technology. All these classes are 5 or 10 ECTS (total
of 30 ECTS in the second and 30 ECTS in the third term) and are examined
by an essay. During some of these courses, the students work on the development
of a language assessment test.
Finally, the student has to write a Masters thesis (15
ECTS). This must be a research thesis: the student should conduct an empirical
study, test subjects (with or without language disorders), process the collected
data and write a thesis which is in principle suitable for publication in
an international journal. Each student has one supervisor for the thesis.
Where the thesis is written depends on the topic and the preferences of
the student. Each thesis is graded independently by a second supervisor
of a different university. If necessary, for example, due to the interdisciplinary
nature of the work, more than one supervisor is involved. |

* If preferred, students can move to another university during
the second term. Options are given in brackets. Students who start in
Milano-Bicocca will have to move to another university
in the second term necessarily, as no second term is offered in Milano.
When the student has finished the
programme, s/he has fundamental knowledge of theoretical linguistics and
brain sciences and is able to apply this knowledge to describe speech
and language disorders. The student has thorough knowledge of speech and
language disorders and basic knowledge of how to design a neuroimaging
study.
The students will acquire competencies in identifying and describing developmental
and acquired language disorders, formulating relevant research questions,
designing appropriate experiments to test speech and language abilities
of language impaired children and adults and they are able to write an
essay with the quality of a research paper.
