Application, registration and Erasmus Mundus Scholarship:

1. I’m European: can I apply?
Yes, you can apply. However, European students are not eligible for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship. They receive a scholarship from the consortium instead.

2. Can I apply with a degree in an other subject (e.g. philology, psychology, medicine) than the ones named before?
As long as there is some knowledge of/specialisation in linguistics this is not a problem.

3. I don't have my degree yet, but will have passed my exams before EMCL starts in September. Can I apply nevertheless or should I wait another year?
Yes, you can apply. Just make sure to indicate this in your application and ask your supervisor(s) to provide prospective grades. Admission will ultimately depend on receipt of the final degree certificates, which must reach us by the end of August, at the latest.

4. Who can apply?
Students as well as instructors (scholars) are invited to apply.

5. Does the “academic curriculum including undergraduate degree” include elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school?
We only need information on your senior high school and any relevant certificates achieved after this (higher education, bachelor, master, post-academic).

6. How many copies of the documents should be attached?
We need one authorized copy of every document. Please, DON’T send ORIGINALS!

7.

Do I have to pay an application fee?
The University of Potsdam does not charge an application fee. However, uni-assist, an agency specialised in managing applications to German universities, where your application is processed first requires an application fee which is listed in the application section and which is not refundable.

8.

8. Do I have to pay a registration fee?
Yes. We charge a registration fee of 500 EUR which is fully refundable with the first installment of your Erasmus Mundus scholarship. The registration fee has to be paid by the end of July before the academic year in which you were accepted to the program.

9.

What is the scheme for the disbursement of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship?
Third-country students receive a scholarship from funds of the European Union. The scholarship will be disbursed in monthly installments. Please note that for legal reasons the money can only be paid at the end of each month. It is therefore advisable to bring enough money with you to cover any living costs in the first weeks after your arrival at the first hosting university and before you get the first installment of your scholarship at the end of September. We also advise you to open a bank account immediately upon your arrival at your first host university to avoid any delay in the payment. The study fees of € 7,500.- will be automatically deducted from the monthly amount paid to you on a proportional basis. You need not pay any study fees in advance.

10.

How important is the opening of a bank account in Europe?
Very important for a smooth implementation of the payment plan of your scholarship! To avoid the payment of unnecessary bank fees and to ensure a fast transfer of the monthly scholarship installments we strongly recommend each student to open a bank account in Europe immediately after the arrival at your first hosting university. The local representatives will help you with the opening of such an account. Ideally, the student can open an account even before his/her arrival in Europe. Please note that it is extremely important to communicate the details of the bank account immediately to the coordinating University of Potsdam (burchert@ling.uni-potsdam.de) to avoid any delay in the disbursement of the scholarship.

Degree and study program:

1. Can the Masters degree be applied in practical fields?
Yes, but the programme does not include a complete training for speech therapy.

2. Can I spend the whole program at one university or do I have to go to another university?
Students must stay at least at two universities to obtain the multiple degree. An example: if you spend the first term in Joensuu, you can either stay there for the second term or move to Groningen (please note that Milano-Bicocca does not offer a second term). In the third term, all students are in Potsdam. This means that Potsdam does not offer courses in the first and second term.

3.

What are possible topics for the final thesis and when do I have finally to decide which topic I want to choose?
A list of topics for the final thesis which are offered by each university of the consortium is published every year on the EMCL website. Students can choose among these options. Deadline for the decision is the end of June in the summer term when all students are at the University of Potsdam. Students communicate their final decision both to their supervising university and the coordinating university which is Potsdam.

4.

I am confused about the different grading systems at the different universities of the consortium. How do these systems translate into the EMCL system?
Due to legal requirements, each participating country in the EMCL program still has its own grading system. However, the EMCL has developed a system to translate national grades into common grades for the European Masters program EMCL which will also appear on the Joint Grade Record issued at the end of the program.

Language:

1. What other exams except TOEFL can I pass for proving the level of my English?
We prefer TOEFL but when that’s not possible, send us other certificates (e.g. IELTS, Cambridge Exams, a.s.o.). Please include information about these exams so that we know what level they represent.

2. What is the minimum score I should reach in the TOEFL test?
The minimum TOEFL score should be 213 in the computer based version, 550 in the paper based version and 80 in the internet based version. For questions about equivalence conversions from other English tests, please contact uniassist, the agency managing the applications (s. ‘Application’)..

3. What module (academic or general) do I need?
We will only accept the academic module.

4. I passed TOEFL some years ago. Will these results still be accepted?
Your exams shouldn’t be older than 5 years.

5. I don't reach the minimum requirements of TOEFL. Is it possible to apply for the program and hand in results of a new TOEFL (retake) later?
Yes, it’s possible to hand it in later. Your definite admission will depend on these papers. They must be ready at least one month before you want to start the programme.

6. In what language should I fill in the form and prepare all the documents?
We accept all information in English or one of the languages known by the consortium: German, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, or French.

7. How should I prepare the translation of my documents? Can I prepare it in any translating office and then notarize them there as well?
We need an officially notarized (by the educational institution, the embassy/consulate, a notary, or a translation office) copy of your information plus a translation in one of the accepted languages. If the translation is notarized, the copy of the original does not have to be notarized. DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS!

8. Do I need to attach the copies both in English and in the original language?
Yes, we need both, but only one of the two has to be notarized.
